The African Union Commission is seeking proposals for research focusing on the following thematic priorities articulated in Africa's Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (CPA) and its Lighthouse Projects: (a) Post-harvest and Agriculture, (b) Renewable and Sustainable Energy, and (c) Water and Sanitation in Africa. The programme is financed through the Financing Agreement between the European Commission and the ACP Group of States under the ACP Research for

Sustainable Development Program of the 10th EDF Intra-ACP Envelop.

New call for proposals: EDCTP Strategic Primer grants

This grant will provide funding for research groups in sub-Saharan Africa and Europe to conduct innovative, ambitious studies that will:

  • Generate results to inform future clinical trials
  • Sustain and strengthen the capacity built up under EDCTP I
  • Increase networking of African and European Member States' research programmes.
Funding is available to support clinical research studies of up to two years duration to address high priority research issues and barriers to progress. The purpose of the award is to provide pump-priming to allow researchers to explore novel and innovative lines of research that may lead to the development and testing of new or improved clinical interventions against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or malaria. Applications must involve researchers based at public institutions in two or more EDCTP-EEIG Member States and researchers at institutions in one or more sub-Saharan African countries.

Deadlines and applications
The deadline for preliminary applications is 14 February 2012.

Grants for computer science meetings in African countries

The Academy of Science for the Developing World, the African Academy of Sciences and Microsoft Research are offering grants for computer science meetings in African countries.

These grants encourage the organisation of scientific activities in the field of computer science in Africa by offering financial assistance (not exceeding 4,000 Euros) to the organisers of conferences, workshops, symposia and special meetings held in Africa.

The support is normally provided in the form of travel grants for principal speakers from abroad and/or participants from developing countries other than the country where the meeting is held. Supported speakers should be from not-for-profit research organisations.

Description

The coordination and support action funding schemes for each of the four areas are worth four million Euros. Areas include: Sub-Saharan Africa; the Mediterranean Region; Latin America and the Caribbean Region; and the South-East Asian Region. Proposals should cover only one country in the areas of the call, and must cover more than one thematic area of the cooperation programme. Consortia must include participants from third countries of the targeted regions. Consortium agreements are recommended but not mandatory.
