Turkey's leading agency for research
The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), an agency that manages and funds research, has been in existence for the past 47 years.
The council's mandate is to provide advice to the Turkish government on science and research.
It also serves as the secretariat of the Supreme Council for Science and Technology (SCST), the highest science and technology policymaking body in Turkey.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the prime minister of Turkey, chairs the SCST, which meets once a year.
The council, which is located in Ankara, the capital of Turkey, provides scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students. One of the funding opportunities it provides includes the national postdoctoral research scholarship programme which is reserved for local students pursuing studies in natural, medical and social sciences; and engineering.
TÜBİTAK also collaborates with the Germany-based Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (the German Research Foundation) and the Magyar Tudományos Akadémia (Hungarian Academy of Sciences) to offer staff exchange programmes.
The council, which is led by Nükhet Yetiş, an industrial engineer who also publishes scientific journals that include the Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry, the Turkish Journal of Biology, the Turkish Journal of Botany and the Turkish Journal of Chemistry.
