New renewable initiative for Africa and Europe?

Africa and the European Union (EU) are hoping to develop a collaborative programme on renewable energy.

The programme, which will be named the Africa-EU Renewable Energy Cooperation Programme, seeks to promote cooperation between businesses in Africa and Europe in renewable energy.

The programme, which has been developed as part of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP), will be discussed at the partnership's first high level meeting, which takes place on 14 and 15 September 2010 in the Hofburg Palace in Vienna, Austria.

The AEEP is one of the eight areas that the EU and the 53 African Union member states are prioritising.

The meeting will bring together policymakers, researchers, energy ministers, representatives from regional economic communities and business delegates.

The meeting will be held ahead of the Africa-EU Summit, which takes place in November in Libya. It is the first high-level meeting of the Africa-EU Energy Partnership.
