Uganda seeks to improve public understanding of science

Uganda is organising an event to help improve public understanding of science.

The National Science Week will take place in Gulu District from 20 to 24 September 2010 under the theme "science, technology and innovation: strategic interventions for prosperity for all". The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) is organising the event. The UNSCT is a quasi-government agency created in 1990 to advise, develop and implement policies for developing science and technology.

The event will provide a platform for scientists to share their research results with the public and offer career guidance to students. It will comprise a secondary schools quiz, a science and technology policy dialogue and an exhibition.

Winners of the Young Scientists Innovation Competition will also be announced during the National Science Week. The competition seeks to help students gain better understanding of science and its impact in their daily lives and in promoting national development.

The call, which closed on 25 June 2010, required students to submit concept papers on science and technology innovations that are relevant to the developmental challenges of Uganda and focused on ICT, physical sciences, and social and behavioral sciences.
