Workshop on university collaboration

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) from South Africa is hosting an international workshop on the role of university collaboration in innovation strategies. This event will be held at UWC from the 8 to 10 November 2010.

Organised within the framework of the Development Policy Review Network, and in collaboration with Ghent University from Belgium (UGent), Wageningen University Research (WUR) Centre for Development Innovation from the Netherlands, NUFFIC from the Netherlands and VLIR-UOS from Belgium, this workshop will have a sub-Saharan Africa regional focus. It enables universities to share best practices in an effort to continue strengthening university and non-academic partner collaboration, and thus boost innovation.

Questions addressed include what defines a successful collaborative relationship, who gains from it and whether partners know each other well enough to make the most out of their relationship. The issue of limiting the loss of financial investment and lack of human capital will also be discussed as well as the ethics of best practices and serving society. The workshop will also look at whether innovation is more than just technological development as well as the role that universities can play in terms of micro-innovation.
