African Union issues call for scientific awards

The African Union (AU) is calling for applications for its scientific awards. The awards will be offered in two sectors: life and earth sciences, and basic science, technology and innovation.

The awards have three categories:

  • the AU-TWAS young scientist award, which is reserved for scientists who are below the age of 40;
  • the AU regional award for women scientists;
  • the African Union continental scientific award.
Prize money worth US$5,000, US$20,000 and US$100,000, will be given to each of the recipients of the awards, respectively. Applicants whose documents are incomplete, are employees of regional economic communities, have received an AU award in the past five years or are nationals of member states, which are under AU sanctions, are disqualified.

The closing dates for the applications are 30 June 2010 for the AU-TWAS young scientist award, which must be submitted to the national academies of sciences or research councils.

The AU regional award for women scientists must be handed in at the regional economic communities by no later than 15 July 2010.

The deadline for the African Union continental scientific award is 9 September 2010. Application documents for this award must be posted to human resources, science and technology department, African Union Commission, PO Box 3243, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
